Weekly Shot: Strengthening Bonds of Friendship

22 August 2016

URI’s 792 Cooperation Circles take unique approaches to mobilizing dialogue and bridge-building in response to the specific needs for peace in their communities. Sharing knowledge or even perspectives can be a great tool for maximizing capacity and network-building, but also to provide that special connection that only being face to face can bring. URI’s Regional Coordinator (RC) exchange program facilitates strengthening this relationship, most recently in the case of Sothearwat Seoung, a Cambodian RC, who visited Despina Namwembe, an RC based in Uganda.

Peacebuilding is at its core about finding commonalities, and providing a strong network of support for peacebuilders is equally important. Thinking back on the visit, both Sothearwat and Despina remarked on the similarities they discovered about themselves, their countries, and their work. These simple but surprising moments aided them both to take time to review their connection to their work on both practical and personal levels. This in turn enhanced their discussions on CCs’ experiences and needs, as well as their own reflections on personal development.
