The Weekly Shot: Preventing Youth Crime in Africa

African Youths Initiative on Crime Prevention, a URI Cooperation Circle in Lagos, Nigeria, co-hosted the 2017 National Youth Summit on Crime Prevention last May, in partnership with the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos.

The summit addressed the high rate of youth involvement in cyber-crime, kidnapping, drug abuse, illegal trafficking, and armed robbery. Speakers also discussed the role of Nigeria’s judiciary, legislature, agriculture, science, and technology in addressing the problem.

Prominent speakers, dignitaries, and ambassadors emphasized the importance of a prevention-based approach to fighting crime, as compared to the more reactionary approach currently being used by Nigeria and other African countries. All suggestions and recommendations from the summit were forwarded to the government and other relevant authorities.
