August 29: International Day Against Nuclear Tests

On 29 August 1991 the President of Kazakhastan closed the nuclear test site at Semipalatinsk where 456 nuclear tests were conducted during the Cold War era. These tests devastated the landscape and left enduring effects on the local population. This day in August marks the first observance of the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
