URI leaders in Pakistan join call to protect holy books

14 April 2011

URI Regional Coordinator for Pakistan Father James Channan and several other URI-Pakistan leaders of different faiths, including Yuel Bhatti, Baghat Lall Khokhar and Malik Tahir, participated in a national conference on the veneration of religions organized by the Minhaj-ul-Quran International and Muslim-Christian Dialogue Forum. The meeting in Lahore brought together top religious and interfaith leaders from accross the country for a conversation about the recent Quran burning in Florida by self-styled pastor Terry Jones, and other acts of violence toward religious figures and symbols. Participants stressed that Terry Jones was an outlyer whose attempts to sow division and hatred are countered daily by those working for interfaith peace. The conference concluded with a resolution condeming the desecration of holy books of all kinds and demanding that the killers of Shahbaz Bhatti be brought to justice.
