Cooperation Circle in Somalia brings awareness to the environment

10 July 2017

The National Association of Somali Science and Environmental Journalists (NASSEJ) in Somalia became established as an NGO in October 2009.  It also became a URI Cooperation Circle soon after that time.

Members of NASSEJ are media professionals whose mission is to inform the world about issues around the environment, agriculture, health and science, within their country of Somalia.  Members include reporters, editors and producers who work for TV stations, radios, newspapers and online media websites.

Their vision is for Somalia to become a leader of international standards to protect the environment.

Their mission is to decrease the level of environmental destruction in the country by conducting a campaign to bring awareness to this issue; to train and strengthen the capacity of journalists reporting about the environment, health, agriculture and science; to offer workshops and educational programs to government agencies and communities involved in the environment.

Earlier this year they launched their first project to bring awareness of the need to protect plants and prevent soil erosion. They also circulated poems and stories through local media outlets in across the country.
