The Peace Procession – which included more than 600 students, non-governmental organization workers, teachers, YMCA members and others – featured floats, choirs, artists and athletes.   The annual event was immediately followed by a concert at the Karickam International Public School, an interfaith institution founded by URI Subregional Coordinator Abraham Karickam and sponsored by a URI Cooperation Circle.

The school’s campus also hosted a Peace Day “love feast,” which included the parade participants, members of the local community and invited guests.

The parade, concert and feast were held in conjunction with the International Day of Peace, an annual event celebrated by the United Nations and people throughout the world as a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence.

The theme of this year’s Peace Day – celebrated everywhere on Sept. 21 – was “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future,” in keeping with the recent United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  More information about URI’s celebration of the International Day of Peace is available at uri.org.
