URI Africa, in partnership with United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), is celebrating the 2013 International Day of Peace (IDP) at the Memorial Garden at the UN Office in Nairobi, Kenya. Representatives of all CCs in Kenya will take part in the IDP event, with this year’s theme: “Education for Peace.”

On the occasion of the celebration of IDP we are also going to unveil the renovated peace pole at the UN Garden. The Nairobi office was established in 1999 in memory of the victims of the 1998 bomb blasts in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam and has evolved to become a venue to mark memorial days.

URI Africa is also launching School Debates for IDP, targeting primary school children in their respective communities. These debates are aimed at promoting & reinforcing Peace Education: integrated, comprehensive education focusing on life skills, human rights, democracy, international understanding, tolerance, non-violence, multiculturalism, and all other values conveyed through the school curriculum on a very basic level.

Depending on availability, three schools will be engaged in a competition where prizes and certificates will be awarded. The target number of students is 20 per school, with two patrons per school and a panel of four judges.  This debate will be recorded to be aired on a local television (Citizen TV) as part of the“ Debators” program.
