In 2009, we formed the Ranchi Peace Circle with the purpose of raising our voices for Tribal and Dalit (untouchable caste) rights and to create a discrimination-free society by engaging interfaith communities. In the last 20 years, (before the formation of the New State of Jharkhand), we have been working in the social sector with various issues like the unorganized labour movement, human rights, securing food for all, and protection of natural wealth.
Upon the formation of the New State of Jharkhand, our movement got stronger against the extracting of natural resources by mining companies, river pollution, and deforestation in the name of industrialization. Presently we are working with five other local organizations against the environmental degradation and the looting of natural resources. Recently, our new approach with interfaith cooperation to protect land, water, and forest became strongly visible and recognized by all local bodies. Now we work to bring various stakeholders to resolve issues, like saving the river, which bring us enormous support to make a greater impact.
In fact, we have taken legal actions against some larger mining factories along the river bank, which had caused maximum water pollution affecting the indigenous community who survived by drinking the same water. We run the largest movement in the area, with nearly 70-80 active members. One of our recent achievements was getting a High Court order to stop the production of a steel company, and there are many more orders yet to come.
Ranchi Peace Circle has active members from Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Tribal faiths. We deal with issues such as: Environmental Awareness Programs, Human Rights, Witch Craft Issues, Women Empowerment, Tribal/Dalit Issues, Self Governance, and Anti Corruption Public Awareness.
