The Weekly Shot: Ascension Day

Ascension Day, also known as “Ascension Thursday,” “Holy Thursday,” or “The Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” is celebrated this week on May 10. On this day, many Christians celebrate the Ascension of Jesus Christ from Earth into the presence of God in heaven. It is celebrated 40 days after Easter by many Christian denominations, although some Roman Catholics choose to celebrate the following Sunday together with Mass.

The occasion is celebrated with prayers, asking for God’s mercy, processions symbolizing Christ's journey to the Mount of Olives and entry into heaven, wearing the color white, extinguishing the Paschal candle, and holding all-night vigils. Some families also celebrate by symbolic activities such as going on hikes and cloud-gazing to teach young children about the journey to heaven.
