Several Cooperation Circles of URI East India commemorate the Indigenous day to honor tribal leaders and to create opportunities to unite and strengthen the voices of tribal communities, also known as Adivasi (indigenous) groups in India, who, over the years, have led movements to maintain connections to their land, the environment, and cultural practices and to secure stable livelihoods.
Currently, this indigenous community is experiencing displacement because of the “land bank” policy, where thousands of acres are given away to companies for development.
For many years, there have been several attempts by mining and extracting companies to take away tribal land for the Adivasi. The outrageous degradation of the environment caused by these extracting companies and illegal mining is a direct threat to the livelihood of the indigenous community.
Today, URI Cooperation Circles, such as Rural Development Society, In-saniyat CC, Ranchi Peace Circle, Bokaro Peace Circle, Samaj Joror Abhiyan, Sarv Dharm Vichar Manch, Hazaribag CC, together with the movement of Jal (water), Jameen (land) jungle working towards the protection of tribal interests and protecting the rights of the Adivasi community and way of life.
The movement has been joined by thousands who are demanding the necessary intervention of the Government and the Supreme Court.
URI Cooperation Circles worldwide are passionate about the well-being of indigenous communities and continue to create initiatives and lead efforts to amplify the voices, actions, and needs of these communities.
