Label: Purpose & Activities

URI Africa has been a cornerstone region for our global network since URI’s inception.

Africa is a home for one-eighth of the human family and it is the cradle of humanity. It is a continent rich in history, culture, natural resources, and diversity of religions, people, and ethnicity. It is a continent of unity in diversity.

URI Cooperation Circles in Africa are actively engaged in: peace-building, social development, access to healthcare, education for girl children, environmental protection, promoting the teaching of the Golden Rule “Treat others the way you want to be treated,” good governance, reconciliation, social justices, human dignity and empowerment of youth. They address the issues of HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, violent extremism, radicalization, and hate speech. They encourage dialogue among different religions, cultures & ethnicity groups.

At the heart of much of this work is the commitment to increasing civic participation at all levels of society and fostering good working partnerships with all stakeholders, including policy-makers, in the effort of making the vision of a peaceful, united and prosperous Africa a reality.

As URI is a bridge-building, interfaith organization, URI Africa is working in enhancing working partnerships with different organizations. URI Africa has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Union Commission, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA) and African Media Initiative (AMI), among many other organizations.

URI Africa works in close partnership with the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union and the Citizens and Diaspora Directorate (CIDO) of the African Union Commission in promoting interfaith and intercultural harmony and peaceful co-existence in Africa.

The Regional Director of URI Africa, Ambassador Mussie Hailu, has been actively working in fostering working partnerships between URI and policy-makers in Africa. He works to raise the visibility of URI and its member organizations in Africa, through representing URI at the Africa Union and the UN office in Africa.

IN 2007, URI Africa established the Africa Peace Award to recognize the committed, effective leadership that is currently being exercised to bring sustainable peace, development, environmental protection, democracy, good leadership, reconciliation, inter-religious and inter-cultural harmony and peaceful co-existence in the continent. The award helps create role models of non-violence and peace-builders throughout Africa.
