International Day of Peace

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, International Day of Peace – or “Peace Day” – was declared as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. URI has been a proud partner of International Day of Peace since our network's inception in 2000.

This year’s theme is "Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All" and it promises to be marked by various activities and events, ranging from peace walks to concerts, as well as art showcases, community outreach and peace education programs.

“In times of insecurity, communities that look different become convenient scapegoats,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. “We must resist cynical efforts to divide communities and portray neighbors as ‘the other’. Discrimination diminishes us all. It prevents people — and societies — from achieving their full potential.”

He added, “Together, let us stand up against bigotry and for human rights. Together, let us build bridges. Together, let us transform fear into hope.”
