URI-Africa Highly Commends the Signing of Joint Declaration of Peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea

United Religions Initiative-Africa is delighted with the good news of the end of the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and highly commends the signing of the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship on 9 July 2018 by the governments of the two countries. URI-Africa also takes note, with great pleasure, of the five-point plan.

URI-Africa strongly believes that the commitment by both countries' governments to resume diplomatic ties and open a new chapter of peaceful co-existence, cooperation, partnership and good-neighborliness represents a historic and significant development and stability for the two countries, for the Horn of Africa and the rest of Africa.

URI-Africa appreciates and welcomes the commitment of Ethiopia and Eritrea to jointly endeavor to ensure regional peace, development and cooperation.

URI-Africa is encouraged by the progress that Ethiopia and Eritrea have made to resolve longstanding disputes and normalize relations. Over the past 20 years, the frozen conflict between the two states has hindered stability in the region. The new peace agreement will pave the road for Ethiopia and Eritrea to play a critical role in promoting stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
