URI Europe’s Cooperation Circles build social cohesion in their communities by holding peacebuilding and conflict-resolution trainings, organizing rural development programs, creating interfaith safe spaces, and more.

Europe - friendship and collaboration

URI Europe’s work is strategically linked to changing demographics, particularly the influx of immigrant populations into historically Protestant and Catholic communities. In recent years, increased immigration, economic uncertainty and the threat of terrorism have heightened inter-religious tensions in urban areas throughout Europe. URI Europe’s Cooperation Circles build social cohesion in their communities by holding peacebuilding and conflict-resolution trainings, organizing rural development programs, creating interfaith safe spaces, and more.

Regional Support Staff

  • Karimah Stauch, Regional Coordinator
  • Lejla Hasandedic, CC Liaison Officer (Turkey/Bosnia and Herzegovina)
  • Angelina Vladikova, CC Liaison Officer (Bulgaria)

Here’s one example of URI’s work in this region:

The refugee children arrived in Germany homesick and frightened, without even knowing their host country’s language. So URI Cooperation Circles volunteered with refugee families. In addition to organizing clothing and toy donations, URI members personally acclimated the children to their new surroundings. Language lessons took the form of art lessons. “They have such a lot of fun with painting,” observed URI Trustee Marianne Horling. “This is a medium to express themselves." The art mentoring not only helped the refugee children learn a new language, but allowed them to work through complicated emotions in a safe and welcoming environment.

URI Europe Cooperation Circles build understanding, friendship and joint actions every day. In a world, where extremist views - right-wing populists or terrorist - get lots of attention, they show that people can connect as human beings, build bonds of friendship, create joint positive actions and work for the common good together.
